New GI Bill: What to Expect Throughout 2011
Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits will undergo several rounds of changes throughout 2011. These amendments are due to the Veterans Education Assistance Improvements Act of 2010. Below is an overview of how these benefits will change.
Post-9/11 GI Bill Changes Effective March 5, 2011 Include:
New limits will be issued for active duty service members concerning the net cost for tuition and fees prorated based on eligibility tiers (40%-100%) previously established for Veterans. These limitations will also apply to active duty Service members transferee spouses.
Post-9/11 GI Bill Changes Effective August 1, 2011 Include:
- The bill will cover public school fees and tuition, including out-of-state tuition and graduate training
- Other VA education programs are included in these changes and monthly benefits will be prorated
- Tuition and fee reimbursement for students attending private universities in the U.S. or abroad will be capped at the lesser out-of-pocket cost or $17,500 annually. The Yellow Ribbon Program is still running, so check to see if your chosen education provider is participating.
- University fund payments will be paid on a monthly basis as opposed to a lump sum payment
- Individuals participating in select Vocational Rehabilitation programs may be eligible for the higher housing allowance
- Interval/break pay will no longer be payable under Department of Veterans Affairs education benefit program (unless otherwise specified by executive order or emergency)
- Fees associated with licensing and certification exams will be considered for reimbursement
- Fees associated with taking national examinations, such as the SAT, will be considered for reimbursement
Post-9/11 GI Bill Changes Effective October 1, 2011 Include:
- Pursue a non-college degree (NCD) program at a non-degree granting school, including flight training programs
- Benefits will cover on-the-job and apprentice training (benefit amount dependent on program)
- Students pursuing select online education programs are eligible for a housing allowance
- Students pursuing their education online or via correspondence are eligible to use their benefits to cover tuition and fees
