Rand Study Cites Challenges to Military Spouse Employment and Education

MyCAA funds and Allied's in-house military spouse scholarship are two options to help spouses get the training they need. More and more these days, Americans are realizing the sacrifices that military spouses make on behalf of the nation. The Rand Corp produced a much-heralded study entitled "Working Around the Military" which surveyed 1,100 military spouses at eight U.S. bases.

One of the study's most distressing findings was that military spouse career and education dissatisfaction is influencing whether service members choose to reenlist in the military. MyCAA and Allied's military spouse scholarships are a resource for military families facing tough decisions.

Findings on Military Spouses from the Rand Study:

  • Military Spouses make $1-2 less (per hour) than civilian spouses
  • Two-thirds of military spouses felt military life negatively affected their employment opportunities
  • Twenty-five percent of Marine spouses were unemployed
  • Army spouses are more than three times likely to be unemployed than civilian spouses

It is findings like these that lead the U.S. government and the military to launch the Military Career Advanacement Account Program (MyCAA) to assist military spouses. Allied Schools' military spouse scholarship program is also an attempt to reach out to the men and women who support service members during long deployments and overseas conflict.

The Military Spouse Career Advancement Account Program (MyCAA) and military spouse scholarships allow military spouses to enroll in a career training program without worrying about how to pay for tuition. MyCAA and a military spouse scholarship cover the tuition costs for military spouses and are effective ways to address the concerns raised about education and career training in the Rand Corp study.
